It was a bittersweet day on April 16th. While the bodies of two Airmen returned home so did the 823rd RED HORSE squadron after a 6th month tour in the Middle East. RED HORSE is a big acronym standing for Rapid Engineer Deployable Heavy Operational Repair Squadron Engineers. The men returned home to open arms from friends and family at a homecoming ceremony. My dad worked for RED HORSE and I know what it is like to have a parent gone for a very long time and only hearing from them maybe once a week or even less. However, my dad loved his job more than anybody I know. Seeing him smiling 5am every morning and ever since I can remember was just something else. I didn’t get it at first why he loved the Air Force so much but as I grew up it began to make sense. It was as simple as the fact that he loved his country more than anything and he truly believed in putting that before himself. My dad has seen a lot in his time in the military being in the Gulf Wars, Operation Iraqi and Enduring freedom, and so much more. Yet he never allowed that to affect him or his family. I never saw him more happy then when he started working for RED HORSE because he was amongst the elite. It is unlike any other squadron in the Air Force, in that they are involved in special operations worldwide and the only squadron that can wear their own, unique covers. They are a, 404-person mobile squadrons capable of rapid response and independent operations in remote, high-threat environments worldwide. Welcome home RED HORSE. Blessed to hear you made it home safe to your friends, family, and community.
